Traditional Korean barbecue is a dining experience. Sitting in front of a tabletop grill, spending a couple hours, and leisurely enjoying a meal. While we love that type of dining – the amount of time required can be daunting. Clearly, we’re not alone in that thought. That’s why we’re seeing more and more fast, casual, Korean spots popping up in cities around the country. These types of restaurants provide diners with all the flavor and flair of Korean food while cutting back on downtime and expense.

Customizable Meals

Consider the popular dish bibimbap. Made up of a bowl of rice topped with veggies, a meat or two, chili paste, and often an egg – it almost sounds like it was made exclusively for fast casual dining. In fact, Korean food works so well as fast casual that Bibigo Fresh Korean Kitchen in San Diego offers the option to build your own bowl with your favorite ingredient mixture.

Think of a Chipotle but instead of burrito fillings behind the counter there’s bulgogi (marinated and grilled beef), pickled vegetables, bean sprouts, tofu, and heavenly Korean barbecue sauce. Crunched for time? Bibigo even offers prepackaged food for customers on-the-go.

Go-to Lunch Options

On the other side of the country in Washington, D.C. you’ll find Seoul Spice, which has a similar operation and several locations. With a focus on Korean as comfort food, this is a go-to lunch spot for locals and tourists alike.

Whether it’s Korean barbecue, poke bowls, or burritos, one thing is clear: the people have spoken. There’s a growing demand for build-your-own food options that put the customer in charge. What will be the next food trend to storm the country?

Have a fast casual restaurant? Let us help with your packaging needs. We stock a wide array of clear plastic bowls, paper and plastic takeout bags, and disposable drink cups. Can’t find something? Just give our Packaging Advisors a call at 888-321-2248 and they’ll be happy to help!

With the New Year comes a slew of new dining options. Certain food trends are on the rise while others are starting to fall by the wayside. We took a look into our own crystal ball to see what 2018 has in store for the food industry and the future is bright.

New food alert: Kolache

Kolache with Brisket

Well it isn’t exactly new, per se. Kolache – the Czech pastry that is often fruit-filled but sometimes filled with savory ingredients – has been around for centuries. Over the last few years, we’ve worked with a growing number of kolache shop owners in Texas. Specifically we’ve seen a lot of them popping up in the Houston area, like our pals at Kolache Shoppe. This year we expect to see the flaky, indulgent hand-helds appear in more and more cities across the nation.

Growing Popularity: Food Halls

In MrTakeOutBag’s hometown of Pittsburgh we’ve seen two inspiring food halls pop up very recently: Smallman Galley and most recently, Federal Galley. Food halls are an entrepreneurial lab for the culinary arts. Hopeful future restaurateurs ply their trade and test their concepts in a supportive environment that comes complete with a fully equipped commercial kitchen and a shared restaurant storefront. We first noticed the burgeoning trend back in July of 2016. The number of halls just keeps growing and shows no sign of slowing. So be sure to check out the hall (or halls) in your city! Chow down on the cutting edge, up-and-coming local spots.

Can’t be stopped: Meal Prep

Show of hands: how many of us are guilty of resolving each New Year to start eating better — only to be pigging out on chocolates by Valentine’s Day? Trust us, we’ve been there. But thankfully, healthy prepared meals are no fading fad. From metropolises to off-the-beaten-path little towns, meal prep companies have found a customer base across the nation. Many have even crossed over into the world of delivery, which means healthy and convenient for customers. We don’t see meal prep slowing down any time soon.

What do you predict we’ll see in the food industry this year? Let us know!

Over the last several years we’ve seen a rise in popularity for the stuffed pastries known as kolache (also spelled kolachekolace or kolacky /kəˈlɑːtʃi, -tʃki/). They’re a type of pastry filled with either sweet or savory ingredients, making this Czech delight loved by many. And when your product is an uncommon delicacy, it’s important to make sure your customers – and potential new customers – know exactly where it’s coming from. That’s why Randy and Lucy Hines, owners of Houston’s Kolache Shoppe, made sure to invest in custom branded food packaging. This move proved especially wise after they gutted and rebranded the famous but outdated shop that they took over.

The History

“The guy who sold us the shop was the Grandfather of kolache,” explains Randy Hines. In addition to the café, the dough recipe was also purchased by former owner Erwin Ahrens, who originally opened the shop in 1970. And while the name kolache may be new to many, the pastries are showing up more and more in bakeries around the country. “Every culture has a stuffed bun,” says Hines. “The Chinese, the Polish. The name changes but the idea is universal.”

Rebranding and Custom Packaging

“At first we kept everything the same, then we revamped it all and brought in some branded items. We wanted it to have more of an artisan feel,” says Randy. When asked if the custom printed paper bags and branded stickers make a visible difference in business, Randy says “it definitely does. It adds a level of professionalism. As a business owner, you need all your pistons firing.” he explains. “So if you’re branding, you want everything to come full circle. You can’t do things halfway – like spend more on good ingredients but then go cheap on branding. We want a great look and feel for our great product, and the packaging helps with that.”

Not a florist or a greeting card company? Not to worry, there are still plenty of ways for your business to boost revenue with festive packaging this February. Whether you’re slinging coffee, crafting cupcakes, or selling prepared lunches, help your customers get into the romantic spirit with eye-catching red packaging.

Red Hot Ripple-Wrap (new product alert!)

Our latest additions to the beloved ripple-wrap coffee cup line are these cherry colored beauties. With the same double wall feature you’ve come to love and expect, this cup helps coffee shops stand out among the competition all year long.

For shops that also sell fresh roasted beans, take a look at our red coffee tin tie bags in ½ pound and 1 pound sizes.

A Sweet for Your Sweet

Red Diamond Candy Box

With a surge in sugary products flying off the shelves, consider presenting your sweetest treats in an appropriate hue. For bakeries we recommend either tulip or lotus cupcake liners in a soft, romantic rose color. These liners add oomph to presentation, and the grease-proof paper means there’s no oily mess.

For all you chocolatiers out there, we say ditch the heart-shaped boxes and go with something more sophisticated. From simple and stylish brick red paper boxes to glamorous metallic red diamond two part boxes, your fine chocolates deserve only the best display.

Box it Up

Pella Bordeaux Two Bottle Carrier

Of course, this is a booming season for wineries. Now, you could sell bottles of fine spirits to your customers and put them in brown paper bags. Or, you can offer them a truly dazzling presentation with wine carrier boxes. Available in two- and three-bottle sizes, the Pella Bordeaux red is a deep, rich hue that enhances your wine’s presentation. The Pella Rossa box color is a brighter, crisper shade.

For single bottles, check out the cheery, Really Red wine sleeves.

Perhaps your company makes prepared food for customers on-the-go. Give them a darling picnic feel with any number of apple colored gable boxes or stackable handled lunch boxes. If your typical box is brown or white, just imagine how noticeable the red will be in your café.

Can’t find a red item that fits your business? How about red dragon Chinese takeout containers? Or our checkered food tissue for lining baskets.

So, give your packaging some extra pop with a splash of color that’ll get some attention from your customers for their Valentine’s Day celebrations.

You can go ahead and call us Cupid, because we’ve brought together some lovely (packaging) couples.

It’s only natural to see lots of coupling around Valentine’s Day. We thought this would be a great opportunity to showcase some of our perfect pairs. These packaging soul mates go together like eggs and bacon, cheese and crackers, or mashed potatoes and gravy. Forgive us, we’re a little obsessed with food! Whether you run a restaurant, a bakery, or coffee shop, we’ve got your attractive packaging duos covered.

Cupcake Boxes + Bakery Bags

cupcake box and bag

When customers leave your shop with a box or two of your best pastries, you want to make sure they have the right bag for the job. Our favorite solution comes in clear plastic to show off your boxes, features a flat bottom to keep things from tipping over, and – perhaps most importantly – it has extra sturdy, reinforced handles on a crystal-clear, super-strong bag. It’s available in three “perfect for bakery boxes” sizes, too.

Bakery boxes also play nice with cake boards.

Pastry Bags + Coffee Cups

pastry bag and coffee

Who can resist a strong cup of coffee and a sweet, flakey treat? Whether you sling croissants or scones; bagels or donuts, you’ll need a suitable, grease resistant bag for baked goods. And what better buddy than coffee to accompany your morning routine?

Of course, when there are multiple cups involved it’s always great to add cup carriers into the mix, too.

Gable Boxes + Liner Tissue

gable and liner

Another dynamic duo is a paper lunch box, also known as gable “barn roof” style handled box, with complementary, attractive and functional food grade tissue. Enhance the presentation of your meals – while keeping grease under control – with the help of basket or box liners that come in both an array of designs as well as colors. It’s a simple, inexpensive way to add perceived value (plus a punch of color) to each of your items. It’s easy to turn dull, disposable to-go lunch boxes and containers into dazzling packaging. Did we mention these boxes are made most often with 100% recycled and recyclable natural and renewable paper fibers?

Custom couples well with just about anything

Perhaps our favorite couple is the one that marries practical packaging with customized branding. You can print your company logo on basket, box or tray liners; takeout boxes or bags, candy boxes or bags, paper soup cups, paper coffee cups and sleeves and more.

You probably have some questions about customizing. Guess what? We’ve got answers. Talk about a match made in Heaven! Call our Packaging Advisors today at 888-321-2248.

In Helena, Montana there is a coffee shop whose clever name says it all: Scenic Brew. Owner Beth White understands the importance of putting the café’s logo on their packaging. That is why the coffee cup sleeves bear the iconic company name and logo.

When they first started working with us they used the solid color Eco-Sleeves. It was a very popular product that was eventually discontinued by the manufacturer. Once these sleeves were unavailable, it was time for Scenic Brew to step up their game with custom-printed sleeves.

The results are in

“We love the sleeves,” explains White. “They are a pertinent piece of our branding.” What makes them so important is that potential customers see the printed sleeves out and about in the world. Imagine seeing a coworker with a Scenic Brew Coffee cup on her desk each day. You start to recognize the image.

“Our cups are very visible and people are quick to recognize a Scenic Brew Coffee cup strictly because our sleeves and dark chocolate brown lids combo is so striking,” says White.

Eye-Catching

It’s clear that having a distinct style, along with a branded item, helps build brand awareness among potential customers in the community. The right kind of marketing can be as influential and as valuable as “word of mouth” when it comes to promoting. It’s something that White recognizes and plans to stick with.

“We intend to continue using this design in both our locations,” she says, “as well as future locations as we continue to grow and open more shops.”

You don’t have to look far to see that it’s been a good year for new products on MrTakeOutBags.com. In 2017 we added many sought-after new items to our website. Each one was a successful addition, but some clearly became favorites among our customers. As this year comes to end we look ahead to what is on the horizon. But first, let’s take a moment to look back at some of our most popular new products.

Citrus au Natural Stackable Lunch Boxes

Ideal for packaged lunches at a corporate event or for packaging baked goods, the stackable handled boxes are a staple here at MrTakeOutBags. We wanted to offer a fresh color combo to our customers, so we came up with this exclusive “Citrus au Natural” look. The bright green and the natural brown kraft work well together, creating something both eye-catching and pleasing.

Red Ripple-Wrap Cups

Not just for Christmas and Valentine’s Day, these vibrant red ripple-wrap coffee cups work all year long. Just imagine customers walking out of your shop with these very distinct cups. They’re sure to get a lot of attention! Be the unique café in your neighborhood with these brand new paper hot cups.

Orange Meal Prep Containers

Our Cube plastic containers are one of the hottest-selling items on our website. With the surge in healthy prepared meals comes the growing need for sturdy, microwavable containers that are reusable and recyclable. When we first starting stocking the classic black option, they were flying off the shelves. We expanded to offer a bright lime green twist, and that saw a great deal of success. In 2017 we were excited to add a vivid orange container to the lineup.

Black chalkboard coffee bags

Admit it, you want your coffee shop to be different than all the others. And that’s great! We saw café owners utilizing our unique products to help set their shop apart from the competition. This year we offered another way to do just that with coffee tin tie bags that have a chalkboard outer layer. With a simple chalk marker or paint marker you can decorate each bag of coffee or tea, add personalized info on when the beans were roasted, or leave them blank for your customers to have fun with.

Have an item you’d like to see us carry? Let us know! Give us a call at 888-321-2248 or drop us a line at [email protected]. We aim to be your one-stop shop for all your food packaging!

Since MrTakeOutBags is located in Pittsburgh, we are extra excited when we help out local businesses. And when they happen to sell health-conscious yet still irresistible lunches, we get downright giddy. We recently had the pleasure of helping Earth Inspired Salads get the printed plastic bags they needed.

Two Locations

The fast causal restaurant has two locations in office-heavy locations. The focus is on providing professionals with high quality and healthy lunches. Pittsburgh is known as a meat-and-potatoes town, but the folks at Earth Inspired Salads know there’s more to it. There is a big market of customers who care about heart-healthy meals. Need proof? Their first location has been in business for four years, and their latest location is approaching its second birthday.

Walking Billboards

“We love seeing our logo walking all around downtown,” says GM Britney Short. “Most of our business is takeout, so we often see people walking around carrying our bags around.” When asked how having a custom bag helps promote Earth Inspired Salads, Short says “It certainly keeps the conversation going. People bring it back to their offices and break rooms.” And with their updated bag design, she feels confident it’s the right conversation now.

The Better Bag

This is not the company’s first shot at custom printing. Unfortunately, though, their first custom bag (which came before we were introduced to them) was ill-suited for the business. A one color design with fonts that did not fit their theme was doing very little for their revenue or their image. Now, equipped with a bag that reflects their brand and as well as their aesthetic, Earth Inspired Salads is becoming an even bigger talk of the town.

Time to make the commitment: starting in 2018 you are going to stop wasting valuable advertising space by putting your company logo onto your packaging. Admit it, you told yourself before that you were going to do it, but for whatever reason you never got around to it.

Perhaps you think it’s too expensive, or that the minimum quantity required is much higher than the amount you need. Or maybe you’re expecting the turnaround time for a printed item to be months. Well, you would be surprised.

Price

Custom printing may be less than you think – not to mention that the revenue boost it can provide for a business is often very impressive. While a printed bag has a higher price tag than a plain one of course, the value that it adds is immeasurable.

Minimum Quantity

This is where we really shine! We’re proud to say that we are able to offer some of the lowest required minimums in the industry. For many flat items (like boxes and bags) we can print as few as 1,000 pieces with a hot-stamping process. Looking to print coffee cups but not prepared to take on 50,000 units? No problem, we can print 5,000 of a size.

Turnaround Time

It’s true, custom items that are imported can take 14 weeks to arrive after an order is placed. That’s one of the reasons we work almost exclusively with American manufacturers. Lead times vary by item, but some things, like custom labels, are made in as few as two weeks (after final art approval).

Tribute Tea: custom labels.

With options like printed stickers, reusable grocery bags, and wine bottle carriers, there are a ton of options available for all businesses. Each business is different. Let us help you find the best way to get your logo out there, in front of potential customers.

When it comes to shipping, people have a lot of questions. They want to know how to calculate the cost, how long an order takes to arrive, and how they can get a better deal on the final price of shipping. There are a lot of factors involved, so we put together this handy guide to help answer those questions.

First, let’s calculate your shipping

First thing’s first, fill your cart with your complete order. Since the shipping is determined by weight and destination, it’s important to have all the items in your cart.

Next you’ll want to fill out the shipping address. Adding the full address, rather than estimating by only the zip code, will provide the most accurate cost.

HINT: Delivering to a commercial address is less expensive than delivering to a residential address. For those who run their businesses out of their homes, this is still considered a residential address. If you have a commercial address that you can use, we suggest doing so.

Once you complete the address fields you can continue to the Shipping & Payment Options page. This will show three shipping methods to choose from: FedEx Ground, FedEx 2 Day, and FedEx Priority Overnight.

Estimate when the order will arrive

When viewing your shopping basket, you can click on “Estimate Shipping” to pull up a map. This map will show the approximate transit time for each region of the country. Please note that most of our products ship from our Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania warehouse. Orders of in-stock items placed by 2 pm Eastern will ship out that day. Anything that is in stock but received after 2 pm will ship the following business day. Some items do ship from our other warehouses and may be delayed. If you have questions about a specific item or transit time, please call 888-321-2248.

Now, let’s get that cost down

Curious as to why the shipping cost is what it is? For starters, many of the items we carry are heavy, often bulky pieces. They are not equivalent to shipping clothing, for example. Bakery boxes can weigh a lot! That’s why we include every order’s total weight in the shopping cart. Any order that weighs 200 pounds or more is eligible for a shipping discount. All you need to do is call our Customer Service representatives at 888-321-2248 and they can apply the discount to your order.

Other items aren’t too heavy, but they are bulky. Because they require a great deal of room in the FedEx truck, their shipping cost is determined by their dimensional weight, or how much space they take up.

But what about free shipping?

We get this question a lot, and for good reason. There are so many online retailers out there who offer free shipping. But is it really free? Often times the shipping fees are built in to the cost of the product in order to cover the shipping. After all, it can’t be free shipping for the retailer, right? They need to pay someone to deliver it. We believe that this is not very transparent, and here’s why: We ship most items from Pittsburgh, PA. It wouldn’t be right to charge our neighbors over in Ohio the same shipping price as we would charge to send something across the country. But when building shipping fees into the product price (and offering free shipping), this is exactly what happens.
