Here at MrTakeOutBags, we obsess over packaging. We’re constantly thinking about how to improve packaging, and often times it all comes down to custom printing. When a company adds their logo to a bakery box or a takeout bag, it leaves a lasting impression. But what about customers who choose not to print their packaging? There has to be some way they can get their products noticed, right?

That’s where the power of the window comes into play. It allows your quality products to be immediately viewed by potential customers. Whether it’s delightfully decorated cupcakes, artisan sandwiches, or high-end olive oil bottles – there’s packaging designed to help you flaunt your wares! It’s a creative and inexpensive way for you to set yourself apart from your competition.

Bakery Boxes

Cakes, pies, and cupcake – they should all be on display! What better way to entice would-be customers than by showing off the goodies you offer? We have windowed bakery boxes fit to hold a single cupcake, all the way up to window boxes big enough for a dozen. Find the right color box that plays well off your products and you’ve just enhanced the presentation substantially.

Takeout and Catering Boxes

People love to see what they’re buying before they make a decision – especially when it comes to meal prep. A perfectly prepared salad may go unnoticed unless it’s packaged in a Bio-Pak View takeout box. One simple little window can be the difference that helps you make a sale. Selling sandwiches? No problem, we carry clamshells with a built-in window so customers can get a view of the food before purchasing.

For catering or for large carryout orders, use windowed catering squares. Rigid and sturdy, these handy squares allow your clients to see exactly what they’re about to dig into.

Bottle and Jar Carriers

If your product is often purchased as a gift (think jams, spread, oils, and wines) then your customers will all but demand you have windowed packaging. Of course, you could sell your fancy, infused olive oil without special packaging. But why would you? Increase the overall value of what you sell by presenting it in a window gift box. The same holds true for jams, spreads, and mustards. Put them in a window box and you’ll elevate their look, and increase their worth.

Still not sure how you can use packaging to improve your products’ value? That’s alright, we’ve got experts for that. Remember, we do obsess over it, after all. Give us a call at 888-321-2248 to learn more!

Summer is officially here, which means some of our favorite eateries are adding barbecue-inspired dishes to their menu. Others are opening up their patios for outdoor dining. And of course, summer is the season for food trucks and festivals. With summer in full swing, it’s important for all of these restaurants, food trucks, and cafes to have the right disposable, fast casual type of packaging for their meals. Make sure you’ve got everything on your list.

Paper soup cups for side dishes

Whether you’re dishing up sides that are hot or cold, sweet or savory, a paper soup cup makes an ideal container. Luckily, there is a container for each type of business. For those who want something eco-friendly, reach for the compostable soup containers. Places with a rustic or American grill feel may want to use cups made from kraft paper. Of course, there is always classic white, too.

Paper food trays for handhelds

Few things scream “summer festival” more than eating cheese fries out of paper food boat. There’s a reason you see so many vendors using these. They’re inexpensive but durable, easy to dispose of, and make it a breeze for customers to hold in their hand and eat from. Convenience is king when it comes to food trays.

Custom printed basket and tray liners

Even though those paper food trays are durable, a messy order of nachos will always benefit from a sheet of waxed food tissue paper. Additionally, barbecue joints that are serving racks of ribs on metal food trays (with all the fixings on the side, of course) are using food tissue. For some restaurants it’s a necessity. It also happens to be one of the easiest, most affordable items to brand. Then every Instagram-worthy snapshot your customers take will automatically have your logo front and center.

California, New York, and Hawaii – what do these states all have in common? All three have a ban on plastic bags. In addition to those, some US cities – such as Boston, Chicago, and Washington, DC – have also put a ban on plastic bags.

To say “plastic bag ban” is a bit of a catchall term. Hawaii, for instance, enacts this ban within its most populated counties, but not statewide. The ruling in Washington, DC is that customers buying food or alcohol must pay a 5 cent fee per bag used – paper or plastic. And when New York enacts their ban in 2020, it will exclude restaurant takeout bags. It will focus more on retailers and grocers instead.

However the specifics may vary, the overarching goal remains the same: drastically reduce the amount of one-time use plastic. Like most eco-friendly efforts, it’s a great idea. How exactly a business carries it out, though, can be a bit challenging.

Paper Bags

Replacing plastic bags with paper ones is a good first step for business owners effected by these rulings. Just make sure you understand your area’s regulations on paper bags before you make the switch. While this swap works in some areas, others places need paper bags to be made up of at least 40% recycled material. In California there is a 10 cent fee even for recycled single use paper bags.

Reusable Totes

When both paper and plastic bags prevent a problem, spring for reusable totes. If this makes the most sense for your business, then the best way to capitalize on these is to have your logo printed on them. When your customers reuse these all over town, they’re showing off your brand. It’s like a walking billboard. Also, when you make such a nice bag available to customers, you can do so at a premium.

Reusable Plastic Wave Bags

We know what you’re thinking – these are plastic bags. So how can they be acceptable in places with a plastic bag ban? If a bag is made of at least 2.25 mil plastic and created from a minimum of 25% post-consumer recycled material, it’s considered reusable. You’ll want to check what the specific regulations are in your area, but in many cases a reusable plastic bag is exempt from the ban. Because of their low price point, they make a great alternative to the non-woven reusable totes. And since they can be used over and over again, you can feel good about stocking them at your business. Colorful, frosty wave bags are a great way to get people to notice your business.

What stops so many businesses from going green? Quite simply, it can be overwhelming. We’ve spoken with so many restaurant and café owners who say that making the switch to eco-friendly packaging can be a daunting task, and they often times don’t know where to start. They have this notion that if one piece of their takeout packaging is earth-friendly, then all pieces need to be. But that’s not the case. Making just one or two simple swaps will make a big difference on your carbon footprint, and your customers will notice.

Swap Plastic clamshells for Bio-Plus takeout boxes

Clear, plastic takeout boxes are one way to go. But if you’re looking to go green, opt for something that isn’t plastic, like the Bio-Plus EARTH carry out boxes, made of 100% recycled paperboard. Or try the Bio-Plus TERRA version, which is fully compostable. And if you want to have something eco-friendly while still being able to show off prepared meals, use the Bio-Pak VIEW takeout boxes. The top window provides a good look at what you have to offer.

Swap Styrofoam for compostable or double wall coffee cups

There are few things we hate more than Styrofoam. That’s why we don’t stock it and instead offer things like Planet Plus coffee cups.  They are 100% biodegradable and compostable and can be used for how or cold drinks. Another option is custom printed double wall hot cups. Because their insulation means there’s no need for a sleeve, your carbon footprint is reduced. Plus there is the added bonus of having your coffee cups printed with your logo.

From plastic bags to recycled paper ones

Perhaps this is one of the most noticeable changes a business can make. Customers often take note of what type of bag their delivery is made in, or what’s used to carry their leftovers out of a restaurant. Show off your commitment to being green with recycled natural kraft paper bags. Of course, if you want to stick with plastic, there are options. You can feel good about making the switch to biodegradable plastic takeout bags.

Remember that no matter what changes you make, big or small, they are all a step in the right direction. And if you need some guidance, or if you’re ready to put your company logo on one of those earth-friendly items, give our experts a call!

There’s a famous scene from the 1967 movie, The Graduate in which the young lead, Benjamin played by Dustin Hoffman is enlightened by his father’s friend, Mr. McGuire:

“I just want to say one word to you. Just one word.”

“Are you listening?”

“Plastics.”

“There’s a great future in plastics. Think about it. Will you think about it?”

Plastics have been in the news quite a bit lately.

In the food packaging business, we think about plastics quite a bit. And the word plastic (sometimes called “poly”) can mean a lot of different things. It can be referenced with a lot of different names and haunted by a whole list of acronyms.

So let’s take a look at some of the most common plastic / poly acronyms and some of the products that are made out of those compounds.

High-Density PolyEthylene

High-Density PolyEthylene (HDPE) has a high strength-to-density ratio, HDPE is commonly recycled, and the products produced from HDPE are often reusable. It is also harder and more opaque and can withstand somewhat higher temperatures than LDPE, Low-Density PolyEthylene.

Some products that are made from HDPE include:

FBACOCT080614

White HDPE Poly CarryOut Bags with Die Cut Handle – 8.25 x 6 x 14″ #1A

FBACOCT120916

White HDPE Poly CarryOut Bags with Die Cut Handle – 12 x 9 x 16″ #1

FBACOCT141014

White HDPE Poly CarryOut Bags with Die Cut Handle – 14 x 10 x 14″ #2

FBACOCT191012

HDPE Side-by-Side Plastic Shopping Bags with Rigid Handle – 19 x 10 x 12″ #5

FBACOCT141015

HDPE Heavy Cake Plastic Shopping Bags with Rigid Handle – 14 x 10 x 14.75″ #3

FBACOCT181718

HDPE Round Tray Plastic Shopping Bags with Rigid Handle – 18 x 17 x 18″ #4

LDPE

LDPE is an acronym for Low-Density PolyEthylene. This type of plastic is weaker and has less tensile strength than HDPE. BUT — its resilience is higher, and its density is lower – so it can actually “stretch” and “flex” better than HDPE without cracking. LDPE is also more transparent than HDPE.

LLDPE

LLDPE is an acronym for Linear Low Density PolyEthylene. It is the most flexible of the plastic sheeting films. LLDPE is blended form of LDPE where the film has much more flexibility, is more pliable, and softer than HDPE. LLDPE is used for films that need a tremendous amount of strength to absorb impacts while not tearing or puncturing. In the event that a tear or puncture should occur, LLDPE is far less likely for the hole to run than tears or punctures in other polys. LLDPE bags provide extra strength and impact resistance that allows a lighter gauge bag to do the same job as a heavier gauge HDPE bag.

PETe

Polyethylene terephthalate is commonly abbreviated PETPETE. It is the most common thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family. PET is the number one recyclable plastic. It’s safe, non-toxic, strong and lightweight. PET is used to produce food trays that can be used for frozen dinners, since they withstand both freezing and (in some cases) moderate oven baking temperatures.

Some of the products that are made from PET include:

XFSDT-16CT

16 oz. Dart Conex Classic Clear Plastic Cups

XFSFN15024M-BLACK

Black Square Plastic Bowl – 24 oz.

XFSFN15024M-CLEAR

PP

Polypropylene (PP), also known as polypropene, is a thermoplastic polymer used in a wide variety of applications. It’s also sometimes referred to as “cello”

Products made from Polypropylene include:

BBC175X4CAFESPOON

Coffee Spoon, Clear Poly Food Bags – 1-3/4 x 4″

FBAPPFL0304

Bite Size, Clear Poly Food Bags – 3 x 4″

PLA

Poly(lactic acid) or polylactic acid or polylactide (PLA) is a biodegradable and bioactive thermoplastic aliphatic polyester derived from renewable resources, such as corn starch (in the United States and Canada), cassava roots, chips or starch (mostly in Asia), or sugarcane (in the rest of the world).

Some of our products that are manufactured using PLA include:

PLA-9

9 oz Compostable PLA Clear Cold Cups

PLA-DL

Compostable PLA DOME LIDS with Hole Slot for 9 to 24 oz PLA Cold Drink Cups

We work with a variety of talented and bright business owners and entrepreneurs. There’s no doubt that they’re rock stars at what they do. But they can’t be expected to know everything, right? That’s why we frequently run into customers who struggle to understand what we mean when we say we need “vector artwork” in order to print their logo. We wanted to put together an easy guide to help better understand what it is and why it matters in the printing world.

What is it?

In the simplest terms, vector artwork is clean artwork. When a logo is vectorized, it means that it’s created with specific software (often Adobe Illustrator) to produce high-quality images. To make vector art, the software uses some pretty complicated algorithms, resulting in artwork that is outlined precisely. This outline makes it possible out rework the art as needed for printing.

What does it look like?

It’s easy to spot non-vector, or raster, artwork. Those files will make an image turn blurry when resized. Lines aren’t smooth and details are all but washed away.

Another easy way to tell if you’ve got raster artwork is to take a look at the file type. Files that are .jpg, .gif, .png, .tif will be raster files. Those saved as .ai, .eps, or .svg will be vector art. Note that most PDF’s are vector files, but not all of them are.

Why is it important?

For starters, it allows our art department to alter your logo to the exact right size for printing – all without getting a fuzzy image. If you’re going to put in all the time, energy, and money to have your logo printed on your packaging (or on anything, for that matter) then you definitely don’t want it to look blurry.

So when you’re working with your graphic designer on your company logo, be sure to ask for vector art files. It will save you so much hassle in the long run! Only have raster files? That’s alright, we can still help you out. We can convert nearly any file into print-ready artwork.

Mother’s Day is around the corner. First of all, don’t panic. There’s still time to pick up the perfect gift for Mom. Second, start preparing for hordes of Mother’s Day brunch-goers to flood restaurants and cafes. Don’t be caught that Sunday understocked or with the wrong type of bags or boxes for your customers. Come on, your mama taught you better than that!

Bakeries Beware

Tons of sons and daughters will head to their local bake shop to pick up something sweet for Mom. And none of them want to hand over perfect little confections in a crumpled bag. Make sure you’re fully stocked in pastry boxes – especially in the sizes you use the most.

Want to up the ante for Mother’s Day? Switch from white or brown boxes over to eye-catching strawberry pink ones. Already use pink? Try window boxes and transform a regular box of your cookies into a bright, cheerful presentation.

Bonus: For an added touch, keep ribbon on hand for wrapping boxes. Those small details can make a huge difference in presentation.

Wine Not Make it Special?

There will likely be just as many Mother’s Day shoppers purchasing nice bottles of wine for Mom, too. While there’s nothing wrong with slipping a bottle of wine into a standard, brown sleeve, there’s something special about putting the same bottle into a brightly color or tastefully printed bag. A wine bag with a fitting grape design, for example, makes more of an impact than a plain bag.

For those who want to really wow their mom, give them the option of some elegant wine gift boxes and carriers. Available in a wide variety of colors, textures, and prints, these holders take a gift from ordinary to extraordinary.

Turn Packaging into Gifting

Don’t forget that successful branding is one of the most effective ways to impress a customer. The right type of custom printing – paired with good marketing – adds value to whatever item is inside the package. And when your branding is that good, the packaging itself can work as a gift presentation. No one sees a Tiffany’s jewelry box and thinks it needs paper gift wrap around it. The same is true for a box of Godiva chocolates.

Great branding is easier said than done, we understand that. That’s why we have expert Packaging Advisors here to help walk you through the process of finding the right packaging for your needs and getting your custom logo printed on it.

Get started with your customized packaging today. Call our experts at 888-321-2248. They’re here Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST.

Recently we’ve seen a big shift in the way drinks are served. It’s the straws that are changing. There’s a cultural shift happening that’s leaving plastic straws in the dust in favor of compostable straws. Take a look at Walt Disney locations, which plan to no longer have plastic straws or stirrers by the middle of 2019. And Starbucks plans to phase out plastic straws from their shops by 2020. The coffee giant will instead introduce a sippy cup-style lid that eliminates the need for straws altogether.  Taking it a step further, the entire city of Seattle put a ban on plastic straws and any other non-recyclable forms of cups and utensils in the food service industry.

soon to be gone: Starbucks to remove all plastic straws from their stores

Why the Change?

The intention of this global shift is to reduce waste – especially waste that is ending up in the ocean. With viral videos like one that shows a sea turtle having a straw removed from its nose, there’s no question that straws are detrimental to wildlife as well as their environment.

While every effort counts, research has shown that straws are not the biggest bad guys when it comes to marine pollution. But that doesn’t mean the food service industry should halt its attempts to be more eco-friendly.

Ready to Swap out Plastic?

If you’re thinking of making the switch from plastic to more eco-friendly straws, let us first say, good for you! Not sure where to begin when it comes to compostable straws? That’s no problem, we got you covered. Currently, we stock drinking straws that are 100% compostable and biodegradable. But stay tuned. We have several paper options coming this fall! Make sure you’re in the know by signing up to receive our monthly newsletter, or give our experts a ring at 888-321-2248 for more information.

With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, we’re seeing a huge influx in the need for festive, green packaging. We rounded up some of our most popular emerald sellers along with some of the very best eco-friendly items. Because being green can be more than just one thing!
